Scientists in Schools

Women encouraging women

  • Phil Carmody, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College, Bentleigh, Victoria
  • Jerani Pettikiriarachchi, Monash University Department of Materials Engineering,
    Clayton, Victoria

Phil applied for Scientists in Schools with the aim to encourage more of the senior students at the girl's college to get involved in science/mathematics careers. Once partnered with Jerani, a PhD student in Biomaterials Engineering at Monash University, the pair quickly devised a plan to expose students at Year 11 and 12 to interesting and unusual physics and engineering careers at Monash University. Jerani called upon the help of colleagues at the university to arrange a day of visits, practicals and challenges.

You can read about this partnership in an article that Jerani wrote for the 2009 spring edition of Compass Online, the online magazine for Monash University postgraduates entitled " Getting girls into science"
