Scientists in Schools

Brothers in Arms

  • John Nichols, Dimboola Memorial Secondary College, Victoria
  • Peter Nichols, CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, Tasmania

The Bass Strait and a further 340km of country driving is no obstacle for identical twin brothers John and Peter Nichols. With SiS support for remote travel, Peter travelled to Dimboola for a day of intense talks and discussions on his work at CMAR in Tasmania.

Yr 12 Chemistry Students with John and Peter Nicholls

During his visit, Peter addressed the school assembly at the start of the day. He quickly followed this up with talks to the Year 11 and 12 Chemistry classes and interested Year 9 and 10 students. He is pictured above with Yr 12 chemistry students.

His talks comprised of a PowerPoint presentation on the research projects he is involved in at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research including new land plant sources, such as the locally grown canola of omega-3 oils and the background for the importance of these projects. Dr Nichols also spoke about his career progression and his general interest in science. The Year 12 Chemistry class were treated to a movie about gas chromatography, the key chemical instrumentation used in oil research. Since this is also part of the Year 12 syllabus, it proved to be some very handy revision!

Peter was most impressed with the interest shown in his work by the students, as well as their general knowledge and career aspirations.
